In the hectic world of motherhood, striking a balance between nurturing your children and taking care of yourself can feel nearly impossible. Thankfully, daily rituals can serve as vital tools for self-care and personal growth. These rituals do not require a significant time commitment; instead, they can be skillfully integrated into your everyday life. They act as anchors, promoting balance and well-being amid the chaos. The key, as with everything, lies in intention.

This post will explore practical daily rituals that can empower busy moms on their personal growth journey. Let’s dive in!

The Importance of Daily Rituals

Daily rituals are much more than mere routines; they provide a sense of structure and control, even though our mornings don't feel like they are "ours." These intentional practices create moments of mindfulness that not only enhance self-awareness but also foster personal growth.

Engaging in daily rituals can produce feelings of accomplishment, leading to greater emotional well-being. By introducing small, meaningful activities into your day you can prioritize yourself without feeling overwhelmed.

Morning Mindfulness: Starting Your Day Right

Mornings can be chaotic for busy moms, I know most of us begin the day by immediately reaching for our phones. This is probably the worst thing you can do. Most of the time it's bad news, celebrity gossip, or an email that finds us anything but "well."

When you first awake, your brain is still in an alpha state. Alpha state means that your brain is producing alpha waves where you are alert but relaxed. You are not yet trying to process a whole bunch of information, so it's a great thing to capitalize on. Take advantage of this time. Start your day with a brief meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simple gratitude reflections. Find a quiet spot in your home, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. For instance, you might consider three things you’re grateful for or visualize one goal you want to achieve that day. Starting your day with intention is so powerful. You get to decide how your day will go, and not let it be passively determined for you by outer circumstances. The tendency is to jump right into yesterday's worries, scrolling on your phone, or trying to sneak in a cup of coffee before your little ones pile drive you in the groin. Simply realizing you have a choice can be a game changer in how your day goes. Even if you do get knocked down, it is far easier to get back up when you have set the intention for a wonderful day. I often tell myself, 'Today is the best day of my life," when I awake in the morning.

Journaling: A Path to Self-Reflection

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and emotional processing, and it only takes about 10 minutes a day.

Some of my favorite ways to journal are: making a gratitude list, and "scripting" or journaling as if I am already living the life of my dreams.

Making a gratitude list is very simple, and you will find that the momentum builds quite easily. I aim for ten things that I am grateful for, but I usually end up with way more. Do you have a roof over your head? Hot water for your shower? Food to eat? Clean drinking water? These are all things that we take for granted, but if you give it some thought, we are truly lucky. Or how about the fact that you opened your eyes this morning? You have a mind that can process and understand what you are reading right now. If you have your mind, you have everything. Your mind controls everything. We have all heard stories of people making miraculous recoveries who were bed-ridden, in a coma, and not supposed to survive, somehow walk out of the hospital. The power of the mind is not to be dismissed.

Scripting is another popular method to help you get into the right mindset. You can take a few minutes to imagine what you would be doing if you were living the life of your dreams, and then write from that perspective. If you could be and do and have anything you wanted, what would your day look like? Spend some time writing a journal entry as that person. Who are you with? What is your schedule like? Do you work for yourself, or someone else? How do you feel? How do people treat you? This can be really fun! Some people write a letter to themselves as their future selves, and then just re-read the letter every day. Or, I like to get myself some multi-colored pens and write a new letter every single day. The repetition is important to impress your subconscious mind, whether you're re-reading the same letter, or writing new ones.

Movement & Exercise: Energizing Your Body

Movement is essential not only for your physical health but also for your emotional well-being. Busy moms do not need to spend hours at a gym; instead, brief and enjoyable bursts of activity can be highly effective.

Get on Pinterest (my God I love Pinterest) and find some ten-minute workouts, go for a walk, or dance to music and get your kids moving in the morning too! There are tons of fitness experts on Instagram have daily exercises for mobility. Somatic yoga/workouts have gotten a lot of hype lately too. Again, Pinterest has plenty of these exercises, or you can find a paid subscription app like YogaGo where you can plug in the amount of time you want to spend, and what kind of workout you're looking for and it will populate it for you.

After the birth of my fourth child, I got really into morning walks. I got up before anyone else, grabbed my headphones and snuck out. This seriously helped my mental health, and helped me drop some lbs.

Digital Detox: Unplugging for Clarity

We all know that too much screen time isn't good for our brains or our overall well-being. When was the last time you felt GREAT after scrolling for hours on social media? I know it can seem like a nice way to relax at the end of a busy day, to tune out and watch nonsense on TikTok or Instagram, but are you sacrificing sleep? What if you had more time to read or work on bettering yourself? Are you really feeling good about yourself afterwards? This is something to think about.

Regular meditation may reduce your desire to scroll through social media. It just doesn't feel good, and when you give your brain some time for quiet, you will start to crave that peace more. You become better in tune with your thoughts and emotions, and you will become more sensitive to what brings you joy and what trips you up on the path to peace.

Try reducing the amount of time you spend on your phone and observe how it affects your well-being. At the very least, start paying attention to how you feel after your screen time.

Evening Reflection: Ending the Day Mindfully

At the end of the day, when you've gotten the kids to bed, or while you're lying in bed, reflect on the day. Think about what went well. If some parts of it didn't go so well, I like to "revise" them, or imagine them going the way I wish they had gone. This is a powerful technique to reshape your life. The more you do this, the better you feel, and it has an impact on your next day and so on. Sometimes I like to make a running list in my mind of all the people I love, and I imagine sending them love and positive energy. Going to sleep in this state does wonderful things for your life! The state you are in when you go to sleep, dictates the state you will awaken in. So if you go to bed feeling love and gratitude, that is how you will begin your next day. It builds on itself and you will notice your days getting easier and having more and more things go your way. As Abraham Hicks says "the better it gets, the better it gets!"

Embracing Daily Rituals for Personal Growth

As with anything, intention is the most important factor for success. If you have a growth mindset and focus on the ways you can improve your life, you will see and feel results. If you constantly compare yourself to others or other versions of yourself, you will feel like a failure. It is all about focus and intention. Where your focus goes, energy grows, as they say.

It can be easy to tell yourself that you do not have the time for daily rituals, but the question is "how badly do you want change?" Can you give up twenty minutes of doom scrolling a day to do some things that will improve your life? Can you sacrifice one episode of your favorite show? If you want to find the time, be honest with yourself, you can find it. The payoff is too great to pass up. It may feel like it's "more work" initially, but it makes your entire life easier in the long run.

Starting with just one or two rituals that resonate with you can lead to significant change. As you grow comfortable, gradually add more practices. Embrace this journey of personal growth, knowing that you are investing in yourself and your family’s well-being.

The power of daily rituals is waiting for you; start tapping into it and watch your growth flourish!
